Alex Feigelman
Ph.D StudentI am a doctoral student at the DRA Lab, researching the area of trust in AI- based online dispute resolution systems. I was recently awarded the University of Haifa President’s scholarship and was selected for the University’s “Doctoral Excellence Program.” My area of research represents a natural development from my first degree and Master’s, where I placed an emphasis on dispute resolution on the one hand, and questions relating to trust and legitimacy on the other hand.
In January 2017, I completed my military service in the Air Force. It was clear to me that I wanted to study law and indeed started my law studies at the University of Haifa the following October. Early on in my studies I was drawn to research. Already in my first year of studies, I became a research assistant to Dr. Milman Sivan and Prof. Rabinovich-Einy in the fields of prisoner work and online dispute resolution, respectively. In my third year of my studies, I became an editorial member of the journal “Law and Government”; and was part of the team who edited a volume on the integration of minority populations in the Israeli legal system.
Because of my strong interest in an academic career, I combined my LLB studies with a Master’s degree in international relations (as part of an accelerated track). My master’s thesis dealt with the voting patterns of Soviet immigrants in the Israeli political system, based on the assumption that political conduct in Israel significantly affects its foreign relations.
Before being admitted to the Bar Association and becoming a licensed lawyer, I clerked for a year and a half with the Haifa District Attorney’s Office in the criminal field. My PhD will deal with the issue of trust in the use of artificial intelligence in the legal system. Artificial intelligence has gained momentum in recent years in all aspects of our lives, as well as in the legal system. This research topic is part of my work in the ERC project as a doctoral student under the supervision of Professor Rabinovich-Einy.
